A Texas Republican state representative on Monday appeared to blame gun control for the Holocaust in a meme posted to her Facebook page, the Dallas News reports.
Valoree Swanson, who represents Texas’ 150th district in the Texas House of Representatives, shared a Facebook meme originally posted to the “Ted Cruz Meme Page,” which showed a photo from a March 13 protest in front of the U.S. Capitol. That protest featured 7,000 pairs of shoes meant to symbolize the number of children who have died from gun violence since the Sandy Hook massacre.
The photo was captioned with, “shoes left by gun control supporters, 2018.”
A second photo featured a pile of shoes from a concentration camp during the Holocaust, captioned with, “shoes left by victims of gun control, 1945.”
As the Dallas News reports, both photos were accompanied with the quote, “those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”

Swanson later deleted the post, but not before Facebook users tore into the Texas Republican for the botched comparison. As the Dallas News notes, one user called the comparison “not only stupid,” but also an insult to “the severity of the Holocaust.”
