Texas Republican quits as Secretary of State with Memorial Day Weekend resignation

Texas Interim Secretary of State David Whitley resigned from his role on Monday, reported The Dallas Morning News.

"I am forever indebted to Texas for all it has done for my family and me," Whitley said in a letter. "Thank you again for this incredible chance to make it a better place."

He was the state's top voting official and faced scrutiny over his practices.

"Usually, a perfunctory act, Whitley's nomination became a flashpoint this session after his office questioned the citizenship of nearly 100,000 Texas voters. Facing steep pressure from voting rights advocates," the report said.
