Texas sheriff slaps down 'affluenza' mom for whining about jail conditions: 'It's a jail, not a resort'

The mother of "affluenza" teen Ethan Couch appeared in court Friday morning for an arraignment and complained about conditions in her jail cell, WFAA reports.

Couch has been arrested on accusations she helped her son, Ethan Couch, flee to Mexico after violating his probation after killing four in a drunk driving accident in 2013. Ethan Couch became infamous as the "affluenza teen" after he was sentenced to 10 years probation for the accident, which also seriously injured others.

His defense had for leniency, claiming the teen's family wealth and poor parental relationships left him with no sense of responsibility.

On Friday, Tonya Couch appeared before a judge wearing a bright yellow jail jumpsuit. She is being held on $1 million bond. Couch complained that it was too bright to sleep in her cell.

This prompted Tarrant County Sheriff Dee Anderson to retort, "It's jail, not a resort," according to WFAA.

According to the Denver Post, Ethan Couch is still being held in Mexico City, awaiting deportation.

Prosecutors believe the pair fled the country in November when evidence surfaced that Ethan had violated his probation. They were detained by authorities after they used Ethan's cell phone to order Domino's pizza in Puerto Vallarta.
