Texas trooper who arrested Sandra Bland will be fired after grand jury indictment

Brian Encinia, whose arrest of Sandra Bland last July added more fuel to criticism of police for excessive force, will be fired from the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) after being indicted by a grand jury on Wednesday, Fusion reported.

The department announced it would be terminating Encinia's employment hours after he was indicted for perjury for lying on his report regarding the arrest.

The department originally criticized Encinia for a failure to "maintain professionalism" while pulling Bland over. At one point, he threatened to "light her up" with his Taser before ordering her out of her car.

Bland was taken into custody. Three days later, she was found dead inside her cell at Waller County Jail. Her family filed a wrongful death suit against both the DPS and county officials after Bland's passing was ruled as a suicide.
