'The crime is conspiracy': Prosecutor explains that question of Trump collusion is now irrelevant

Former Watergate prosecutor Nick Ackerman told MSNBC on Saturday that the it's a moot point whether or not President Donald Trump colluded with the Russians in the 2016 election and whether or not that was a crime.

"The crime is conspiracy," Ackerman told anchor Richard Lui and national security reporter Ken Dilanian.

Lui asked whether Ackerman has a sense of whether special counsel Robert Mueller is leaning more toward prosecuting a case of collusion or conspiracy.

"I think the big enchilada here is the conspiracy to break into the Democratic National Committee in violation of federal computer crimes law and to use those emails to help Donald Trump get elected," said Ackerman.

All of that, he said, explains a motive as to why Trump and his surrogates have been trying to interfere with the investigation.

"All of this is going to come together in 2018," Ackerman concluded.
