‘There’s a lot of talk in the active ranks’ about Trump’s insults against military leaders: Retired general

Retired Army Lieutenant General Mark Hertling told CNN on Wednesday that President Donald Trump's attacks on former military leaders are rankling active-duty service members who are disturbed by his lack of respect for their service.

Reacting to Trump attacking Ret. Gen. Stanley McChrystal by ridiculing his military career, Hertling said that such disrespect for anyone who has risked their life serving their country is shocking for many in the military.

"There's a lot of talk in the active ranks right now about these continual assaults on general officers and the military," he said. "Make no mistake about it, it is being discussed in the active ranks about what is occurring with the president and how he's treating the military."

Hertling also suggested that many within the military have been disturbed by the president's efforts to transform government agencies into extensions of his political operations.

"Those in the military are very concerned about the politicization of the military," he said. "Anytime you drive a wedge in there, just like you try to drive a wedge in the Justice Department or the intelligence community or anything else that is supposed to be apolitical, you have a problem."
