'Insult comic' Trump incapable of running on policies – only 'abuse': conservative
August 14, 2024
Conservative pundit David Frum wished Donald Trump's campaign the best of luck in keeping him quiet the rest of the way.
The 2024 campaign has been turned upside down by the ascendance of Kamala Harris as the likely Democratic nominee, and the former president has been lashing out with bizarre statements as his campaign struggles to slow the vice president's momentum, which Frum said would turn even more voters against him.
"Mike Murphy, the Republican campaign consultant a decade ago or nearly a decade ago said that asking Donald Trump to talk about policy, it's like teaching Charles Manson to foxtrot," Frum told CNN. "He can manage a step or two, but then he's going to put a pencil in your eye because he's Charles Manson and Donald Trump is Donald Trump."

Republicans such as Kevin McCarthy and Nikki Haley have gone on conservative media urging Trump to drop the personal attacks on Harris and focus on policy, but Frum said that was a fool's errand.
"He's an insult comic – that's what he is," Frum said. "He doesn't know, he does less about policy than anybody probably to ever run for high office ever. But what he does know is how to abuse and denigrate and humiliate and demean. That's what he does. If you don't like that, he's not your guy and if he is your guy, don't pretend he's not like that because he's like that."
