Arizona on brink of charging Trump aides as 2020 investigation ramps up: report

Arizona lawmakers may be on the brink of slapping multiple people linked to Donald Trump's 2020 campaign with criminal charges, according to a new report.

Grand jury subpoenas sent out in recent weeks suggest Attorney General Kris Mayes could soon decide whether to pursue a criminal case against Trump's fake electors in Arizona, Politico reported Wednesday.

The subpoenas constitute "a sharp acceleration of their criminal investigation into efforts to overturn Joe Biden’s victory in the state," according to the report, based on six anonymous sources.

The Attorney General's office declined to comment.

"It was not clear whether Mayes is considering charges against people close to Trump’s national campaign," wrote reporters Betsy Woodruff Swan and Kyle Cheney, "or whether her investigation remains focused on the Arizona GOP officials and activists who aided Trump’s bid to overturn the state’s presidential results."

Prominent Arizona Republicans tied to Trump’s post-election efforts include former state GOP chairwoman Kelli Ward as well as state Sens. Jake Hoffman and Anthony Kern, both of whom served as fake electors, Politico notes.

News broke in August that Mayes' office would investigate the Trump campaign's post-election actions in Arizona, one of seven lost states Trump tried to reclaim with slates of electors told to submit his name.

Similar efforts in Georgia spurred Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis to charge Trump and more than a dozen others with election racketeering.

Trump pleaded not guilty.
