House GOP holdouts were persuaded to vote in favor of President Donald Trump's spending bill after getting a sneak peek at coming executive orders, House Speaker Mike Johnson said Thursday, according to Politico.
Johnson gave himself a pat on the back Thursday afternoon as GOP lawmakers voted to pass the megabill a "day early," meaning ahead of Trump's Fourth of July deadline. Politico noted that the getting GOP holdouts over the hump took some help from Trump's administration, who gave the lawmakers a "better 'understanding' [of] how the Trump administration will carry out the soon-to-be law — not future promises."
“I don’t think they exacted a lot of specific commitments or concessions or anything like that,” Johnson said after the vote. But "a lot of the discussions were about what executive orders will be forthcoming as it relates to the new legislation, and how can we be involved as a House to codify that.”
Trump’s “big, beautiful bill” is a sweeping legislative package that promises major changes to taxes, spending, immigration, and social programs. The bill will permanently extend Trump's 2017 tax cuts for individuals and businesses. It also calls for deep cuts to Medicaid and stricter work requirements for able-bodied adults without kids, as well as reductions to food stamp benefits, with new work requirements and increased state contributions.
Critics say about 17 million people will lose health insurance under the bill.
