Trump-boosting Republicans just unleashed plan to obstruct Mueller’s Russia investigation

Republican leaders of both the House and Senate Judiciary committees have signed on to an effort by a Texas Republican to directly go after special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation in Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election and potential obstruction of justice by the Donald Trump administration.

House Judiciary Committee chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-VA) and Senate Judiciary Committee chairman Chuck Grassley (R-IA) signed onto a letter by Rep. Brian Babin (R-TX), the Daily Callerreports.

“With numerous reports emerging almost every day on possible conflicts of interest and allegations of political bias, it would be in the interest of both the public and the Special Counsel team to speak to the American people through their elected representatives in Congress,” the Daily Caller reports Rep. Babin's letter reads. “Accordingly, we respectfully request that one of broth of the Judiciary Committees immediately convene a public and open hearing or series of hearings to bring Mr. Mueller and his team out of the shadows and into the public square.”

Rep. Steve King (R-IA), Rep. Trent Franks (R-AZ), Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-CA) and Rep. Dave Brat (R-VA) are also said to be among the 19 Republican members to sign onto Rep. Babin's letter.

In October 2016, seconds after describing himself as a "genteel Southerner" Rep. Babin went off of Hillary Clinton. After Donald Trump referred to Clinton as "such a nasty woman," Rep. Babin defended his fellow Republican.

“Sometimes a lady needs to be told when she’s being nasty,” Rep. Babin suggested.

One year later, Rep. Babin appears to ostensibly in charge of President Donald Trump's defense before the judiciary committees of both chambers of Congress.
