Trump breaks his Twitter silence on Comey: 'False statements and lies, total and complete vindication'

President Donald Trump broke his silence on James Comey's testimony by claiming "total and complete vindication."

The president had been expected to tweet during the former FBI director's testimony Thursday, but instead his social media account went silent for nearly 48 hours.

Trump's attorney issued a statement claiming Comey's testimony proved the president was not under investigation, although the former FBI director promised to go into more detail with senators in a private session.

The president characterized the FBI director he fired as a liar, but he also claimed Comey's testimony had vindicated his own assertions.

Comey told lawmakers that he passed along to a friend his memo about a private meeting with Trump, which the friend then shared with reporters.

The former FBI director told the Senate Intelligence Committee that he kept notes of his meetings with Trump because he was worried the president would lie about their discussions.

"I was honestly concerned that he might lie about the nature of our meeting," he said, "and so I thought it really important to document."
