During a rare press conference Wednesday, President Donald Trump defended his Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh against sexual assault allegations by citing the slaveholding past of George Washington.
"If we brought George Washington here and we said, we have George Washington, the Democrats would vote against him," Trump said. "Just so you understand. And he may have had a bad past, who knows, you know? He may have had some -- I think accusations made. Didn't he have a couple of things in his past?"
The president went on to say that Democrat "con artists" like Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) would "100%" vote against the founding father.
Politico's Edward-Isaac Dovere noted on Twitter that the comments were reminiscent of the time the president sarcastically asked if statues of Washington would be taken down following the white supremacist rally in Charlottesville that was ostensibly in defense of Confederate monuments.
