George Conway says Donald Trump’s mental decline is speeding up, and he pointed to one habit he believes gives it away.
“It’s disinhibition,” Conway, the lawyer and longtime Trump critic, said on The Bulwark’s flagship podcast with host Tim Miller.
Miller opened the conversation by reading a recent post Conway wrote on X: “I’m just going to say it. I think he will physically make it to January 20, 2029. I strongly doubt he will make it mentally.”
Conway, who just launched his own Bulwark show, Psycho Politics, with a premiere episode on Trump’s mental state, said the president’s decline has been “constant,” but that “lately it’s accelerating.”
Miller noted that Trump’s cursing has become more frequent, something he said is also common in older people. Conway agreed, saying Trump “basically has few inhibitions to begin with.”
“He’s just saying whatever comes to his mind and his mind was never a steel trap to begin with,” Conway said.
As an example, Conway pointed to Trump’s riff about Sen. Jon Husted’s backside at a rally in Youngstown, Ohio this week. Trump told the crowd he “looked at his a--” while talking up the senator’s football career.
Conway contrasted Trump’s current speeches with a decades-old “Today” show interview, in which he said Trump was “totally coherent,” and with a 2016 debate answer on energy policy that Miller said now sounds almost normal by comparison.
Conway, who has long described Trump in psychological terms, argued that narcissists grow more detached from reality as criticism mounts and poll numbers fall, and he pointed to the stakes.
“This guy has nuclear weapons. So it’s really scary, actually,” Conway said.
Trump has repeatedly insisted he is sharp, telling supporters he “aced” multiple cognitive tests and calling for mandatory cognitive exams for presidents. His rallies have nonetheless drawn scrutiny, including a recent stop where he raced through his affordability routine to a quiet crowd.
