Trump is leading a 'top-down conspiracy against the constitutional order': Ex-GOP insider
March 27, 2024
David Frum, a former Republican insider who worked as a speechwriter for President George W. Bush, put former President Donald Trump's efforts to overturn the 2020 election in stark terms on Wednesday.
During a CNN panel discussion about the potential disbarment of former Trump attorney John Eastman, Frum argued that punishment was absolutely warranted for an attorney who falsely claimed that Vice President Mike Pence had unilateral authority as president of the United States Senate to throw away certified election results.
However, Frum said he was also not surprised that it's taken years to properly discipline Eastman and his fellow MAGA lawyers given the scope of their offenses is so unprecedented in modern American history.
"We haven't seen a top-down conspiracy against the constitutional order since the 1860s in the United States," he said. "And so... it feels new because it's so old and a lot of people are baffled."

Frum also cautioned Americans against feeling sympathy for the plight of Trump underlings who are now facing potential disbarment for their actions.
"We need to keep in mind always, we're talking about a top-down conspiracy against the constitutional order led by the president that ended in violence," he said. "This is a very serious matter and if it's not punished, it will repeat."
Frum's comments about Trump's attacks on the American constitutional order took on new relevance amid revelations that the Republican National Committee is reportedly making believing Trump's lies about the 2020 election a "litmus test" for employment.
Trump was reportedly upset that the RNC didn't go farther in boosting his bogus stolen election claims four years ago, and he has been working to ensure the committee follows his orders without question in this election cycle.
