The Trump administration was buried in mockery on Wednesday afternoon after federal prosecutors announced a felony charge for a man accused of shouting profanities at federal agents in Washington, D.C., and throwing a Subway sandwich at one agent.
The incident happened around 11 p.m. Sunday as a Metro Transit Police detective patrolled the 2000 block of 14th Street NW in Washington, D.C. The detective was joined with U.S. Customs and Border Patrol officers.
At one point, authorities said a man identified as Sean Dunn stood within inches of the Border Patrol agent and pointed his finger in the agent's face, yelling, "F--- you! You f---ing fascists! Why are you here? I don't want you in my city!"
Dunn continued shouting obscenities for several minutes before crossing the street. At one point, Dunn approached the same agent and threw a sandwich at the agent's chest, officials said. A video recorded the ordeal and was posted to social media, authorities said in a statement of fact sheet.
After trying to flee, authorities said Dunn admitted he hurled the sub.
"I did it. I threw the sandwich," he said as he was being processed.
Jeanine Pirro, the U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia, announced Wednesday that the man was charged with a felony.
"So President Trump has vowed to make D.C. safe and beautiful again," Pirro said. "And the president's message to the criminals was, if you spit, we hit."
"Well, we didn't quite do that the other night when an individual went up to one of the federal law enforcement officers and started jumping up and down, screaming at him, berating him, yelling at him, and then he took a Subway sandwich about this big and took it and threw it at the officer," she explained. "He thought it was funny. Well, he doesn't think it's funny today because we charged him with a felony, assault on a police officer."
"So there, stick your Subway sandwich somewhere else!"
The internet lit up in mockery over the incident.
National opinion columnist Will Bunch deadpanned on Bluesky, "The sandwich was also processed."
Dennis Croskey, a retired high school history and government teacher, joked on Bluesky, "My God! There was a submarine attack on Washington, D.C?"
Self-described feminist Laura Chapin wrote on Bluesky, "Absolutely nothing illustrates the performative bulls--- comedy of Trump's assault on DC like charging a guy for throwing a sandwich. May the ridicule be eternal."
Congressional candidate Alex Hardy wrote on Bluesky, "Border Patrol is acting like the sandwich had immigrants hiding in the mayonnaise. Was it a footlong? He probably felt emasculated by its overwhelming girth. Cowards. We don't want them in any city. They should move to Germany and see how far their nazi salutes get them.
Journalist Radley Balko wrote on Bluesky, "The man should never have to pay for another sandwich."
Criminal defense attorney Ken White, who jokingly modified his Bluesky handle to I Did It I Threw The Sandwich Hat, added: "I THREW THE SANDWICH But I did not throw the panini."
MSNBC legal analyst Kristy Greenberg wrote on X, "You know DC crime’s bad - the U.S. Attorney made a video when a guy threw a Subway sandwich at a cop. Call the National Guard - that sandwich had some mustard on it."
