Politico senior writer Jake Sherman told CNN that it was no surprise that nobody wants to step take over the White House Chief of Staff position from John Kelly, and predicted that President Trump's reported favorite for the job, House Freedom Caucus chair Mark Meadows, might be the only person who could halfway pull it off.
"You're walking into a dark time in Trump's presidency," Sherman said, responding to anchor Brianna Keilar's observation that it was "extraordinary" how many people were declining the position.
"The Mueller investigation you have to assume will come to a close at some point. He is facing what will be a tough re-election challenge in 2020. Hill investigations," he added. "That's why people are making the case that Meadows would be good."
"He is somebody he fancies himself a deal maker of sorts and someone who can manage the oversight process," Sherman said. "Trump doesn't have anyone who can do that at this point."
