Trump 'doesn't mind' if Ilhan Omar gets death threats -- attacking her is a 'political winner': WaPo reporter

Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) has reported getting a major uptick in death threats after President Donald Trump posted an incendiary video linking her to the 9/11 terrorist attacks -- but no one should expect him to stop anytime soon.

During an appearance on CNN Monday, Washington Post White House reporter Toluse Olorunnipa said that the president believes that it's good politics to demonize Omar and other young Democratic lawmakers because it distracts from the multiple other scandals plaguing his White House

"This is an opportunity for the president to change the narrative and not have people talking about his tax returns or investigations or the Mueller report," he said. "He seizes on every opportunity he gets to shine the spotlight on progressive members of congress and paint them as the other."

In fact, Olorunnipa went so far as to say that Trump doesn't care if he's putting Omar's personal safety at risk.

"The president doesn't mind that there are people are making death threats based on the video -- he sees it as a political winner for him," he said. "He can stand next to the flag and say, 'We'll never forget 9/11 and look at the Democrats who are downplaying the tremendous loss that happened that day.' This is clearly a political move by the president."
