President Donald Trump picked up support from a notoriously "fickle" voter demographic in his 2024 re-election, but CNN's Harry Enten said that group is running away from him.
The 79-year-old president lagged behind Kamala Harris with Generation Z voters by just six percentage points in his third campaign, but that young demographic has largely abandoned him since last February, the chief data analyst told "CNN News Central."
"I mean, he has justfallen off a cliff when it comesto Generation Z," Enten said. "Look at this:Donald Trump's net approvalrating in February of 2025. This was a month into theadministration. He was at plus-10 points on the approvalrating, he was on the right sideof the ledger. Look at this –falling off that cliff. That isa drop of 42 points, to minus-32points on the net approvalrating amongst Generation Z. Mygoodness gracious. This, as Isaid, is a very swingy group andit has swung very much away from Donald John Trump."
"Okay, so if I'm Democrat, youknow, I'm celebrating, yay," he added. "Youknow, Donald Trump has fallenoff a cliff, yay. We've gainedin terms of the party IDmargin. Now what's importanthere, includes independents wholean towards the party, independents being the key wordup there. Generation Z is moreindependent than any othergeneration, and you can see ithere. Take a look here: 56 percent of Generation Z self-identify asindependents. When you don'tpush them towards a party, compared to just 40 percent, theaverage of the othergenerations. So yes, they are inthe Democratic camp right now. They don't like what Donald Trump is doing. But look, thatball can easily go back into theother court right now. Democratsgot to take that ball off theground. We're in the NFLplayoffs, and they got to runwith that ball, because if theydon't, I can assure you thatthe Republican Party will, as wesaw in the 2024 election."
"A very fickle group, to besure," agreed anchor John Berman.
