Harris campaign budges on second debate — with one condition

Campaign officials for Kamala Harris may consider a second debate with Donald Trump in Michigan on one condition.

The former president announced last weekend that he planned to debate the vice president Sept. 25 in Grand Rapids in an event moderated by NBC News anchor Lester Holt. While the Harris campaign signaled it was open to that, it reiterated it had reached no such deal with the GOP nominee or the network, reported MLive.

“We are open to another debate, and we’ll continue those conversations,” the Harris campaign said in a statement. “But to be clear, any additional debate would be subject to Trump actually showing up on Sept. 10. We’re not playing his games.”

Trump said he would debate Harris on ABC on Sept. 10, despite previously backing out, saying he had been originally scheduled to debate President Joe Biden a second time instead of Harris.

But the president stepped aside due to concerns his age and his performance in that first debate against Trump, and his endorsement of Harris sent her to the Democratic nomination, which will become official at the party's convention next week.

Harris' entering the race has erased Trump's lead in Michigan and other key swing states, and her rallies have drawn thousands of supporters while the Republican nominee has reduced his events until the Democratic National Convention ends.

GOP vice presidential nominee J.D. Vance has questioned whether he would debate Democratic candidate Tim Walz, saying the opposing party hadn't chosen a nominee yet and may not nominate the Minnesota governor tapped by Harris as her running mate.
