New York Times reporter Susanne Craig revealed many of the colorful details about Donald Trump and his lawyers in the first day of court on Monday. Among them was the speech that Alina Habba made before the court in which she outright lied and misconstrued facts to the judge.
"She wasn't getting [facts] wrong because they were honest mistakes," said MSNBC host Stephanie Ruhle.
"This is what Donald Trump does," agreed Craig. "He repeats a lie until it's passed into history as fact."
"And that's it!" exclaimed Ruhle. "She wasn't getting them wrong because she didn't know better. She knew better. She knew what the judge ruled last week and Donald Trump actually knows the value of his assets, right? All of this is rooted in the value of his brand that he's been BS'ing for 20 years."
She recalled Trump's battle with Deutsche Bank when he claimed that his brand was worth billions and that should get him loans.
"They told him to take a hike," Ruhle described.
She went on to ask former assistant district attorney in Manhattan, Catherine Christian, what the consequences are for a lawyer like Habba, who lies in court on behalf of her client.
"There are no consequences for Donald Trump but for his lawyers — because that wasn't an opening statement — that was basically her giving a press statement," said Christian. "She's also, I think, his press spokesperson for these cases. She's a real lawyer, but she also acts as his press person."
Christian walked through the court rules for procedure and ethics that guide Bar Association members allowed to practice in each state.
"In court, there is a professional responsibility, [you can't] make arguments that you knowingly know are not based in law and facts," she explained. "You just can't make that. You can make arguments, you know, all of us who have tried cases could step on that line. But if you know for a fact that it's not based on law and facts, you're not supposed to make that. So, she might be dealing with issues after this trial. So, hopefully, she is getting paid well."
