President Donald Trump's approval rating on inflation has fallen to levels never before recorded for a sitting president, according to CNN's Harry Enten.
The 80-year-old president's net approval on inflation — the share approving minus the share disapproving — has averaged roughly 50 points underwater for months, sinking 52 points underwater in May, 48 points in June, 50 points in July, and an average of 50 points in August, according to Reuters/Ipsos polling.
"These numbers are historicallyawful and they've beenhistorically awful for a longperiod of time," Enten said. "You just don'tever see numbers like this."
Trump has posted the 11 worst individual polls on inflation of any president in history, all recorded since April, making him the first president ever to fall 50 points or more underwater on the issue.
"No other president?" said CNN's John Berman. "You'retelling me this is worse than itwas for Joe Biden in 2022?"
Enten agreed, saying Biden's standing on inflation in August 2022, a period widely seen as damaging to Democrats ahead of that year's midterms, was 38 points underwater at the time – 12 points better than Trump's current average – and Biden's numbers were trending upward.
The decline marks a dramatic reversal from the 2024 campaign, when voters trusted Trump over then-Vice President Kamala Harris on inflation by seven points, according to ABC News/Ipsos polling at the time, and Enten characterized the shift as an approximately 60-point swing away from Trump on an issue that helped power his return to the White House.
"The issue that got Donald Trump re-elected to the White House and is still thenumber one issue in the minds ofthe American electorate," Enten said, "and hestuck 50 points underwater and aplace that no other presidenthas ever been before."
