Fox News got more than they bargained for on Thursday when they asked an attendee of President Donald Trump's Senate rally in Rock Hill, South Carolina, and accidentally interviewed a Trump opponent.
The clip generated immediate fury from MAGA pundits.
When asked why he was there, the man, identified as "Tom," said, "Well, in the late 70s, I was a little too young to go to South America for the Jonestown Massacre. But this is as close as I'll ever get, so that's why I'm here. There's nothing like seeing a cult right up front."
Far-right commenters on social media were enraged — with some even suggesting that the comparison of Trump supporters to the Jim Jones cult was a threat of violence.
"UNREAL: A guy just snuck inside Trump’s SC rally on Fox wearing a 'DEATH' shirt and comparing the crowd to the Jonestown Massacre," wrote Students for Trump founder Ryan Fournier. "This is deeply unhinged. Security needs to find him IMMEDIATELY. You do NOT mess around at a presidential rally!"
"NOW: In a bizarre and unsettling moment, an anti-Trump plant in the rally just referenced the 1978 JONESTOWN MASSACRE and called MAGA a cult," wrote RightLine chief content officer Eric Daugherty. "WHAT A FREAKING PSYCHO. INVESTIGATE HIM NOW and KICK HIM OUT. Talking about massacres like this in a room of thousands with POTUS set to attend is not acceptable. Ban him from all future rallies too."
"Hey @SecretService, you guys should IMMEDIATELY track down this man who was just on Fox INSIDE Trump's rally wearing a 'DEATH' shirt, comparing the rally to the 'JONESTOWN MASSACRE,'" wrote right-wing commentator Nick Sortor. "This dude is CLEARLY unstable."
