President Donald Trump’s South Carolina rally descended into chaos Wednesday as multiple protesters were dragged out, including at least two who appeared to be roughed up during a confrontation with a Trump supporter.
The disruptions repeatedly interrupted Trump’s speech as security escorted demonstrators from the venue almost immediately after he began his remarks, prompting chants of “USA! USA!” from the crowd.
During one removal, a man appearing to be a Trump supporter attempted to strike a protester as the demonstrator was being dragged away.
“They’re crazy!” Trump declared. “These people are crazy.”
Trump accused the protesters of being outsiders being paid $250 to disrupt his rally, without offering evidence.
“Most of them are from different parts of the country, by the way. They’re not from here,” he said. “It’s all paid for. They’re a bunch of fakers.”
Trump added: “They’re terrible people. The people that pay them are sick, and they want to destroy our country.”
Moments earlier, Trump launched an odd complaint about another demonstrator’s interruption.
“What was that noise I just heard?” he asked. “That was a loud, horrible, disgusting sound.”
Trump also accused protesters of deliberately timing their disruptions to ruin his speech.
“I’ve had three punchlines, and three of them, they time them beautifully,” he said. “These people are serious losers, I tell you.”
The confrontations continued Wednesday, with Trump later acknowledging that another protester had apparently been punched during a scuffle.
“Wow. Who’s the guy that threw that punch?” Trump asked.
“The guy stood up, and he just let that little — and he got whacked,” Trump said. “He got whacked.”
He also called the protester a "lunatic" and “a very unattractive-looking guy.”
"Actually, I'm not supposed to talk about looks," Trump said. "But that guy was a really unattractive guy."
