Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) absolutely laid into presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump on Monday, and it was a thing of beauty.
Trump has responded to Warren's brutal attack with a novel counterattack of his own: Namely, he says that it's Elizabeth Warren who's the real racist.
Trump on Monday told NBC News correspondent Hallie Jackson that Warren is a racist whose career rests on fraudulently claiming to be a Native American.
"We call her Pocahontas for a reason," said Trump. "She said she's 5 percent Native American. She was unable to prove it. She used the fact that she was Native American to advance her career. Elizabeth Warren is a total fraud... She made up her heritage, which I think is racist. I think she's a racist, actually, because what she did was very racist."
While Warren has in the past claimed to have some Native American heritage without any proof to back it up, the reality is there's no evidence that she ever used this to further her career.
In fact, when Warren was asked if she wanted to apply for admission under Rutgers's Program for Minority Group Students, she declined. What's more, her employment documents at the University of Texas had her listed as "white," while the head of the appointing committee who recommended Warren for her position at Harvard says that her heritage played no role in her getting the job.
At any rate, it looks like the Senator from Massachusetts has once again successfully gotten under Trump's skin and spurred him to make an inflammatory, factually incorrect statement.
Or put another way: Mission accomplished.
