President Donald Trump continues to rage against the U.S. Supreme Court for ruling against his global tariffs and threatened to impose them anyway — and CNN's Harry Enten warned him he was backing a real political loser.
The 79-year-old president threatened new "obnoxious" tariffs in his global trade war after the court struck down his "liberation day" duties as unlawful, but Enten told "CNN News Central" that most voters agreed with the ruling against him.
"I would just say, 'Dude, president, what are you doing, man?" Enten said. "The American people arewith the Supreme Court, they'renot with you. I mean, just takea look here, you can see itreally clearly. Americans onSCOTUS and Trump's tariffs, thecourt should should overturn, look at this: overall, 63 percent, theclear majority want itoverturned, and then you look atindependents, 69 percent, a very nice 69 percentsay that they wanted overturnedas well, and I will note the [Marquette University] Law poll has actually sometimeshad this independents higher, intothe 70s. This is actually arelatively low point, and it'sstill more than two thirds ofindependents who say that thecourt should overturn thosetariffs."
The court's decision actually offered the president a political lifeline that he has so far refused to grab, Enten said.
"I would just say, toquote George Costanza, the Supreme Court did Donald Trump afavor and he should stop all ofthis, but he's not," Enten said. "Why do I saythat? Because just take a lookhere: Trump's net approvalrating on trade and tariffsduring his entire second term, every single poll that meets CNNstandard for publication, everysingle one he's underwater inall of them, all of them datingback to last year.
"Even when hewas inaugurated, his overall netapproval rating was positive but ontrade, he was negative. There'snot a single poll, not a singlepoll, in which his net approvalrating on trade and tariffsduring his entire entire secondterm, in which it was positive.Again, as I said, the court did Trump a favor. You might expecthim to step off but based upongoing on Truth Social his truthshe's doing anything but that."
"He seems really focusedon tariffs and the Americanpeople don't want that at all," Enten added. "They don't want that at all. Just take a look at this: The Trump admin is focusing too muchon tariffs, 60 percent, three in five Americanssaying the Trump administrationis too focused on tariffs. Thisis where they want him focusedtoo little on lowering prices,74 percent. The clear majority of Americans believe that Trump isnot focused on the economy, notfocused on the economy, and toofocused on tariffs."
