During a speech held by the Jewish Republican Coalition on Saturday, President Donald Trump told audience members that Israel's Benjamin Netanyahu is their prime minister — a common anti-Semitic trope.
While discussing a meeting he had at the White House with Netanyahu in which he made the controversial decision to "recognize Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights," Trump told the audience he "stood with your prime minister."
The "dual loyalty" trope — which many critics, including the president, claimed was used by Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) when she called out the pro-Israel AIPAC group — suggests that American Jews are loyal to both Israel and the United States.
Trump jokingly "thanked" Rep. Omar earlier in his speech.
"A special thanks to Representative Omar of Minnesota," he said, prompting boos from the audience.
“Oh, I forgot. She doesn’t like Israel, I forgot, I’m sorry," the president said. "No, she doesn’t like Israel, does she? Please, I apologize.”
