Trump unleashes bonkers tweets attacking Mueller for prosecuting Flynn: ‘They want to scare everybody’

President Donald Trump on Thursday issued a strange tweet in which he insisted that special counsel Robert Mueller only gave former national security adviser Michael Flynn a "great deal" because he felt so bad about how poorly Flynn had been treated.

"They gave General Flynn a great deal because they were embarrassed by the way he was treated -- the FBI said he didn’t lie and they overrode the FBI," the president wrote. "They want to scare everybody into making up stories that are not true by catching them in the smallest of misstatements. Sad!"

Trump then followed this tweet up by simply writing, "WITCH HUNT!"

Despite Trump's insistence that Flynn didn't lie to the FBI, Flynn pleaded guilty to doing just that nearly one year ago. Additionally, Trump himself in a past tweet said that he "had to fire General Flynn because he lied to the Vice President and the FBI."

Special counsel Robert Mueller's sentencing memo for Flynn also specified that the former national security adviser has "has assisted with several ongoing investigations," which was a primary reason why it recommended no jail time for lying to the FBI.

Mueller specified that Flynn had met with investigators on 19 separate occasions and had delivered, among other things, information on "links or coordination between the Russian government and individuals associated with the Trump campaign."
