A Trump biographer predicted a reckoning inside the White House after next week's midterms, warning one outcome would leave nearly everyone around the president exposed.
Michael Wolff, author of multiple books about Trump, told co-host Joanna Coles on Thursday's episode of "Inside Trump's Head" that a Republican loss of the Senate would set off a meltdown in the West Wing.
"The implosion will be intense," Wolff said. "We will return to the worst days of the first administration."
According to Wolff, the White House has already resigned itself to losing the House, but the Senate has become the real fight. "I'd say certainly it's 50-50," Wolff reckoned of the Senate, arguing "there's probably a greater likelihood that they will lose."
If that happens, Wolff expects the president to turn on his own staff. "Everybody's job will be up in the air," he warned. "Everybody will be blamed by Trump for losing this election. Certainly he will not take any blame."
Wolff argued that staffers would also face "the wrath of the Democrats" the day after. "The first thing that everybody is going to have to think about is getting a lawyer," he explained. "You could go from the most powerful people in the country to the most beleaguered people in the country in a matter of hours."
Wolff singled out White House chief of staff Susie Wiles, saying "her fate if they lose the Senate is written, she will go." The only staffer he expects to survive is Natalie Harp, Trump's devoted aide, whom he called "probably the only safe person in the White House."
Attorney General Todd Blanche faces particular danger, according to Wolff, who described him as having become "the chief enabler of Donald Trump." He argued Blanche knows the cases he's pursued against Trump's perceived enemies "have no chance of succeeding in court," but "he has to do them anyway because Donald Trump tells him to." Wolff predicted Democrats "will try to impeach Todd Blanche" rather than focusing their firepower on Trump himself.
Trump himself will come through untouched in Wolff's telling. "Donald Trump will rise again," he said. "He will blame everybody."
"In some sense, life does not change for Donald Trump," Wolff added. "He just gets more Trumpian."
