'Doomed': Experts say Trump election racketeering case just heard its 2024 death knell

A Georgia appeals court Wednesday sounded the death knell for former president and convicted felon Donald Trump's Georgia election racketeering case, legal experts said Wednesday. At least, for 2024.

The Court of Appeals of the State of Georgia issued this stunning blow with an order staying Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis' case until Trump's challenge to her prosecution is resolved.

"That’s a wrap on Fulton County until 2025," Atlanta attorney Anthony Michael Kreis wrote on X.

"If the case wasn't doomed for 2024 before," added Politico's senior legal affairs reporter Kyle Cheney, "it is now."

Lawfare reporter Anna Bower was among the first to report the ruling regarding Trump's challenge — in which he contends Willis should be disqualified over her admitted personal relationship with since-departed special prosecutor Nathan Wade.

The subsequent legal battles over Willis' relationship with Wade prompted attorney Randall Eliason to respond, "Can't blame the courts for this one. The DA did this to herself."

The appeals court is not expected to issue a ruling on Trump's appeal until the spring of 2025, at which point the matter could go to the Georgia Supreme Court, Bower reports.

Her news was met with frustration from followers who argued "Justice delayed is justice denied."

Former prosecutor Andrew Weissmann took a subtle jab, drawing a comparison to Trump's federal election interference put on pause as the Supreme Court weighs his presidential immunity claim.

"Another Court, this one in GA, reaches out to stop a duly-voted grand jury indictment of Donald Trump from proceeding," Weissmann wrote.

X user Bill DeMayo noted Trump has already been convicted of criminal charges in New York City over attempts to conceal salacious stories ahead of the 2016 presidential election.

"More delays, and for what? He's still a Felon," DeMayo wrote. "But I guess sure let's kick it out so he can just be live-streamed from Rikers or Home Arrest."
