Video shows chaotic scene after Border Patrol agent fatally shoots Guatemalan woman in the head

A federal agent shot a Guatemalan woman along the Mexican border in southern Texas.

The Border Patrol agent responded Wednesday to a report of illegal activity near a culvert in Rio Bravo, where he discovered a group of possibly undocumented immigrants, reported KGNS-TV.

The U.S. Customs and Border Protection agent tried to detain the group, but he said they attacked him with blunt objects.

The agent fired his gun and shot a woman in the head, killing her.

The victim was identified by reporter Aura Bogado as 20-year-old Claudia Gómez González, who had friends and family living in the U.S.

The aftermath of the shooting was recorded on video and streamed on Facebook Live.

“Why are you mistreating them?" a woman yells at the border agent. "Why are you mistreating them? Why did you (shoot) at the girl? You killed her, he killed the girl. She’s laying there and she’s dead.”

President Donald Trump ordered the deployment of National Guard troops earlier this year along the U.S.-Mexico border, as lawmakers say Border Patrol face rising dangers on the job.

Assaults on border agents surged in 2017, but CBP figures show those attacks have dropped by 32 percent through March, compared with last year.

Border Patrol agents have reported being assaulted at less than half the rate of other law enforcement officers, at about one reported assault per 44 agents.
