WATCH: Dem lawmaker accuses White House of lying about contacts with Bannon

A Democratic congressman investigating the Trump campaign's ties to Russia accused former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon of conspiring with his attorney to shield the president.

Bannon testified Tuesday before the House Intelligence Committee, which subpoenaed him after he refused to answer questions about the presidential transition or Trump White House -- and Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) blasted the former administration official and his attorney on MSNBC's "Morning Joe."

"Steve Bannon's attorney also represents Don McGahn, White House counsel, which I think is a monumental conflict of interest, and I suggest these guys are working together to advance a narrative to protect the president," Swalwell said.

The attorney, William Burck, reportedly relayed questions during Bannon's House panel testimony to the White House, which then instructed him not to answer.

White House Chief of Staff John Kelly says the administration was not in contact with Bannon or his attorney, but Swalwell suggested the White House was lying about those communications.

"Well, that would have been pretty bold for that lawyer to come into that room and state to Congress -- you can't lie to Congress -- that he was talking to the White House when he was indeed not," Swalwell said. "That lawyer represented he was in contact with the White House and our staff was in contact with the majority staff with the White House, so we were all on the same page as far as what the White House's position was."
