WATCH: Watergate lawyer John Dean nails the 'interesting timing' of latest FBI bombshell

Watergate attorney John Dean on Thursday evening pointed out that CNN had "interesting" timing when releasing a report on the inner workings of the FBI during Donald Trump's presidency.

Earlier in the evening the network reported that immediate aftermath of Donald Trump's decision to fire former FBI director James Comey, the bureau "scrambled" to figure out what to do.

Many senior Justice Department officials, including Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, thought that Trump needed to be "reined in," two sources who spoke to CNN said.

As a result of those discussions, then-Acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe opened an obstruction of justice investigation into Trump -- before special counsel Robert Mueller was appointed.

Dean commented during the panel discussion that the the timing of the bombshell report "is interesting" because Comey is testifying before Congress tomorrow.

"These are questions that are just perfect to be asked under oath before the House Judiciary Committee," he said.

"The timing of this is interesting," he reiterated, "but it's not surprising to me given the information Comey took back after his meetings, that the FBI would say, 'we've got to open an .'"
