'What the f*ck?': Larry Wilmore slams Alabama for DMV closings in mostly black counties

Larry Wilmore blasted Alabama for making it much harder for black residents to get photo IDs after passing a state law requiring voters to show a photo ID.

Wilmore had taken the state off his list of "crazy" states when Republican Gov. Robert Bentley ordered the Confederate flag removed from state buildings in June, after a white supremacist murdered nine black worshipers at a South Carolina church.

But the "Nightly Show" host restored Alabama to the "cray" list after pointing out it was "a state so conservative they're avoiding gay marriage by using laws against interracial marriage."

Lawmakers passed a 2011 law requiring photo IDs to vote, but they recently ordered the closure of 33 offices where driver's licenses and other identification cards can be obtained -- leaving only four such offices in the state.

"Is this just a coincidence, or something more?" Wilmore said.

Of the 10 counties with the highest number of non-white registered voters, eight of them will lose their department of motor vehicles office, and every county where black voters make up 75 percent or more will see its office closed.

"What the f*ck?" Wilmore said. "Seriously, Alabama? Look, I know I shouldn't expect much from a state whose flag is the Bars without the Stars, but I hoped it was just the stars that were racist. Maybe the bars really did believe in states' rights."

He pointed out that state Rep. Terri Sewell has asked the U.S. Department of Justice to investigate -- but Wilmore said that could end when "President Trump swears in."

"Fun fact, though," Wilmore said. "Selma, Alabama, is in Rep. Sewell's district. That's right. Selma, as in the Oprah Winfrey vehicle, and to a lesser extent, that march that led to the Voting Rights Act -- and now Alabama is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act by making it harder for black people to vote."

"Okay, that is not cray, that is the crème de la cray," he added.
