White House claims Trump actually is in the Oval Office working -- despite clear absence of Marine sentry

The White House is doubling down on President Donald Trump's claim to be in the Oval Office working.

"I'm in the Oval Office," Trump claimed Monday morning.

Multiple White House reporters quickly disputed the account.

When the president is in the Oval Office, a Marine sentry is posted outside the door. At the time of Trump's tweet, no sentry was posted.

Over two hours after Trump's tweet was fact-checked, the White House claimed Trump really was at work.

"I just looked into the Oval Office myself, and [the president] was in fact sitting behind the Resolute Desk working," deputy press secretary Hogan Gidley claimed.

Gidley did not say when Trump had arrived at work or why a sentry was not posted if the commander-in-chief had in fact been working at the time he claimed.

He did, however, lash out at the press for reporting that Trump's Twitter claim was undermined by the lack of a sentry.

"So, now I’m just waiting for you and the rest of your ilk to either stop jumping to false conclusions, correct the record, or, here’s a thought, call the press team to ask," he lectured.

Trump has sought to portray himself as working hard to end his shutdown, despite the fact he has reportedly not spoken to Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) or Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) since December 11, when Trump claimed he would be "proud" to take the blame for the shutdown.

Trump has cancelled his plans to attend a New Year's Eve party at his Mar-a-Lago resort and will instead be making an appearance on Fox News.

Today is the 10th day of Trump's shutdown over his attempt to get American taxpayers to foot the bill for the border wall he had promised Mexico would fund.
