A woman who was on a flight with House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) over the weekend urged him to stand up to President Donald Trump's ban on people from Muslim countries.
In a letter that was allegedly passed to the Speaker during a flight on Sunday, the woman begins by thanking Ryan for his service to the country. The letter was later shared on Reddit by a friend of the woman.
"We may not personally agree on many issues, but one thing I know we both believe in is the greatness of this country," the woman writes. "This is why this past weekend was so troubling. I grew up in NJ in the shadow of the Statue of Liberty. I was taught to be kind and to accept and welcome all people, no matter their origin."
The woman points out that "immigrants are just people that used to live somewhere, and now they're living somewhere else."
"I hope that moving forward that you can remember the teachings all Christians were raised with -- to love thy neighbor and help those in need," the writer says. "I can only pray you stand up for yourself and what you know is best for the country -- not just your party."
"Be on the right side of history," the letter concludes. "And be aware that all of us, all races, nationalities and religions, are at your mercy."
