An anonymous woman has written to Toronto Globe and Mail advice columnist David Eddie claiming that she's thinking of divorcing her husband because of his fanatical love of President Donald Trump.
According to the woman, her Trump-supporting husband has only become more uncompromising about politics over the past couple of years, and he's made it impossible to have rational discussions about politics.
"I’m very moderate in politics, but slightly left of centre," she writes to Eddie. "I like to follow the truth where it falls. But he will not allow for any kind of discourse or debate. He’s right, and I’m wrong. According to him, I’ve been brainwashed."
Things got so bad recently, the woman writes, that she's now left the house and is mulling divorce.
Eddie does not immediately recommend filing for divorce, however, and tells her that it seems like their marriage has some real communications problems that go beyond politics.
However, he also says that if she really feels strongly enough about her husband's Trump love to leave the house, then maybe the problem is severe enough that a divorce might be warranted.
Still, he doesn't think she should entirely give up on her marriage just yet.
"A good couples therapist will (ideally) tease out the good things in your relationship, help you learn to communicate better, maybe figure out a way repair some of the damage all of this has done, even get you back on track," he writes. "You did reach out to me, so that tells me you haven’t given up."
