'Doesn't seem worried': Analyst says Comer’s scrutiny of Biden curiously absent for Trump

House Oversight Chairman James Comer (R-KY) crashed and burned going over President Joe Biden's financial records with a fine-tooth comb to look for a reason to impeach him, a Washington Post analyst wrote in a scathing column Wednesday — but now he's signaling Trump won't get an iota of scrutiny, because in his view Trump's got nothing to hide.

"Almost immediately, he got to work trying to tie President Joe Biden to business deals involving his son Hunter and brother Jim," wrote Philip Bump. "He failed, accomplishing little more than detailing payments received by the other Bidens and hinting ominously that occasions on which Hunter Biden’s business partners met his father meant that something sinister (and apparently undetectable even with the robust investigatory powers of Congress) was afoot."

California declares state of emergency over bird flu

Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) officially declared a state of emergency over bird flu concerns Wednesday, a step he said was necessary to prevent the spread of the virus.

The bird flu disease – known as Type A H5N1 – has already appeared among dairy cattle in 16 states and has been spreading rapidly in California, Newsom said in a news release. The state’s agriculture department found the virus in 645 dairies — about half of which were identified in the last 30 days, The New York Times reported.

GOP mulls killing stopgap funding bill after Musk sends 'shockwaves' through Capitol

Lawmakers are considering killing a stopgap bill that would fund the federal government through mid-March — and avert a holiday shutdown — after an Elon Musk X post sent "shockwaves" through Capitol Hill.

Chad Pergram, senior congressional correspondent for Fox News, reported on air that lawmakers may try to "pull this interim spending bill off the floor." Instead, they may go with a "clean bill" — though he noted it wasn't immediately clear what that entails.

'Shook me to my core': Ex-health insurance exec reveals horror stories that made him quit

A former health insurance executive for Cigna opened up in The New York Times Wednesday about his experience that left him "disgusted" — and forced him to leave the insurance industry.

This comes amid a flurry of national conversation on the ethics of health insurance, and the denials of claims for the sick and vulnerable, kicked off by the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson and a subsequent internet phenomenon of people openly celebrating the crime and the alleged assassin.

Trump world wants to 'Make America Healthy Again' — but divided on how: report

Two people in President-elect Donald Trump's orbit have competing visions about how to address America's obesity epidemic, and whoever wins may have a years-long impact on public health.

According to a Wednesday report in the New York Times, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. — who has been tapped to lead the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) – is planning to roll out an anti-obesity campaign aimed at "lifestyle" changes. RFK Jr.'s plan is reportedly focused on emphasizing healthier nutrition, and encouraging Americans to make time for a daily exercise regimen.

Biden urged to pardon whistleblower jailed for leaking Trump's tax returns

Outgoing President Joe Biden should grant a pardon to Charles Littlejohn, the IRS contractor sentenced to five years in prison for leaking tax information about President-elect Donald Trump, Rolling Stone's Bob Lord and Kenny Stancil wrote in an impassioned plea in Rolling Stone published on Wednesday.

Trump was infamous throughout his first term for keeping his tax returns under wraps, the first major party candidate in decades to do so, despite promises to release them after an "audit" had been completed. Some of that information was revealed in 2020 and published by The New York Times.

'Even weaker than expected': Journalist shreds House GOP's attack on Liz Cheney

The Washington Post's Philip Bump on Wednesday took a look at some House Republicans' report recommending a criminal investigation into former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) for her investigations into President-elect Donald Trump — and came away particularly unimpressed.

In promoting his piece on Bluesky, Bump revealed that he found the report on Cheney "even weaker than I expected" and added it was "also pretty clearly an effort to curry favor with Trump."

'Deeply weirded out': Conservative 'revolted' after discovering he may have inspired Trump

President-elect Donald Trump received a tongue-lashing in the conservative National Review after he moved to sue veteran pollster Ann Selzer for releasing a poll that showed him losing in Iowa — data that, he, with no evidence, claims in legal filings Selzer had maliciously rigged to try to prevent him from winning the election.

This legal action, which comes shortly after ABC News reached a controversial $15 million settlement of Trump's lawsuit against George Stephanopoulos for saying he was "found liable for rape," makes no sense, wrote GOP commentator Jeff Blehar.

Dem suggests CNN reporter gets pay cut in tense exchange over Congress wage hikes

One provision in the recently negotiated federal spending package is a proposed pay increase for members of Congress, which would be the first in over a decade.

However, members of Congress from both sides of the aisle have come out against the potential pay raise. Rep. Jared Golden (D-ME) told Politico that federal lawmakers already make more than 90% of Americans, and that he would not support the continuing resolution (CR) unless language is inserted that would block the pay bump.
