An Iowa Republican senator acknowledged he was "concerned" Tuesday about the threat of a trade war following inflammatory statements from Donald Trump, but downplayed the president-elect's comments as merely a "negotiating tool."

Trump on Monday said he plans to impose a 25% tariff on all imports from Mexico and Canada, and a 10% tariff on goods from China on his first day in office. The move is meant to stem the flow of drugs coming over the border and illegal border crossings.

And how the incoming president responds to those challenges – many of which were not issues in the 2024 campaign and Trump didn’t face in his last term – will deeply impact his new administration, New York Times foreign affairs opinion columnist Thomas Friedman wrote Tuesday.

'Highly unusual': Elon Musk's X objects to very specific piece of The Onion's Infowars bid

Satirical newspaper The Onion made waves when it moved to buy the assets of Infowars, the far-right conspiracy theory webcast of Alex Jones, from a bankruptcy auction. But there was a sudden, unexpected wrinkle in the sale, reported 404 Media on Tuesday: lawyers for tech billionaire Elon Musk objected to a specific piece of the sale.

The complaint, wrote Jason Koebler, is that the sale includes Infowars' accounts on Musk's X social media platform, previously known as Twitter — and Musk's legal team wants it to be clear they actually own those accounts, not The Onion or Infowars, and all people and organizations on the platform have a "license" to use it, not ownership of anything on it.

Patel pressed to have all of the information around the Russia probe declassified, thinking it would expose wrongdoing in the intelligence community, CNN reported in 2020.

Trump's trade war with China is about to hit a hard wall of reality: columnist

Donald Trump has already begun to ramp up threats of a trade war, with a vow to enact sharp new tariffs across the board on imports from Mexico, Canada, and China to strong-arm them into stopping the flow of drugs and migrants. But his plans may quickly fall apart, wrote Eduardo Porter for The Washington Post, because there are economic truths that Trump can't avoid through bullying.

Economists have sounded the alarm that Trump's proposed tariff regime will vastly increase the cost of goods for most Americans in a variety of categories.

Newsom: If Trump cuts energy credits, we'll pass our own — and exclude Musk's Tesla

Donald Trump and his right-hand man, tech billionaire Elon Musk, want to abolish federal tax subsidies for electric vehicles. But California Gov. Gavin Newsom is issuing a threat, reported The Daily Beast: if those tax credits go away, California will pass its own— and add a requirement that disqualifies Musk's company.

Musk, who headed up a key super PAC that ran voter outreach for Trump in the 2024 election, has been tapped to head up an unofficial task force alongside far-right businessman Vivek Ramaswamy, known as the Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, after an internet meme. The task force's job is to recommend ways to slash government spending and inefficiency and it has pledged to balance the budget, which experts have reservations about.
