What the Bible actually says about abortion may surprise you

In the days since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, which had established the constitutional right to an abortion, some Christians have cited the Bible to argue why this decision should either be celebrated or lamented. But here’s the problem: This 2,000-year-old text says nothing about abortion.

As a university professor of biblical studies, I am familiar with faith-based arguments Christians use to back up views of abortion, whether for or against. Many people seem to assume the Bible discusses the topic head-on, which is not the case.

'Going to pay a lot more': Here’s how Trump’s deportations will lead to huge tax increases

President-elect Donald Trump ran on deporting millions of undocumented immigrants if he won a second term. And now that he prepares to enter the White House in January, his incoming administration has promised that mass deportations will be at the top of his mind from day one.

Reuters reported earlier this week that Trump's plan to deport a significant portion of the 13 million undocumented immigrants currently living in the United States would cost roughly $968 billion over a 10-year period. This includes the cost of hiring untold thousands of additional Department of Homeland Security personnel to round up, detain and process targets of Trump's mass deportations, in addition to the construction cost of detention camps, immigration judges and other related costs.

Brace for fight as Trump's GOP prepares new corporate giveaway

Economic justice organizations are bracing for a grueling uphill battle as U.S. President-elect Donald Trump and his Republican allies in Congress lay the groundwork to swiftly enact another massive tax cut for the wealthy and large corporations, a move that would worsen inequality and add trillions of dollars to the nation's deficit.

With Trump soon to be in the White House, a Senate majority secured, and control of the House in sight, Republicans are wasting no time preparing for a legislative push to extend soon-to-expire provisions of their deeply regressive 2017 tax law and further cut taxes for rich Americans and large corporations.

As DOJ unseals murder plot charges, fears of Trump Iran policy mount

Amid growing concerns about what U.S. President-elect Donald Trump's return to the White House will mean for Washington's rocky relationship with Tehran, the Department of Justice on Friday announced charges against an Afghan national accused of plotting to assassinate the Republican at the direction of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

Though Trump survived two shooting attempts during the campaign, neither appears to be tied to Iran's alleged plot to kill him.

Bill Maher's guests say Dems shoved Harris in a broom closet — and set her up to fail

Kamala Harris was set up “to fail” by President Joe Biden's refusal to clear the way for a Democratic primary and instead pass the torch to his vice president with just over 100 days to pitch herself to the American public, one expert said Friday night on "Overtime" with "Real Time" host Bill Maher.

“When Biden refused to step aside and not run again, he was supposed to be that bridge, he backed off on that promise due to arrogance and then he drops out after a catastrophic debate performance and they set Kamala Harris up to fail,” said Sarah Isgur, a senior editor at The Dispatch and former director of the Office of Public Affairs at the U.S. Department of Justice.

‘Welcome to being a Republican’: GOP strategist jabs 'patronizing' Dems on CNN

A Republican strategist on Friday lampooned Democrats in an on-air rant where she called the party out for the way they speak to Americans struggling economically, before revealing what she sees as their “biggest problem.”

“They kept almost telling the American people from the podium like they're, they're dumb-dumb, the economy's fine…everything’s great, and it was so patronizing,” GOP strategist Erin Perrine said during a panel discussion Friday on CNN’s “NewsNight.” The Republican kicked off her vocal sound-off after journalist and contributing Boston Globe opinion writer Tanzina Vega told host Abby Phillip that Democrats’ messaging to the middle class “didn’t seem to connect.”

'Dominance play': Maggie Haberman says Trump had ulterior motive with phone call

President-elect Donald Trump likely had ulterior motives when he handed tech billionaire Elon Musk his phone while speaking with Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, in an eyebrow-raising moment on Friday that a New York Times reporter called a “dominance play.”

Earlier Friday, Zelenskyy reportedly called to congratulate Trump while he and Musk were together, and somewhere in the conversation, the former president handed the phone to Musk. New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman, who has covered Trump extensively for years, said Trump clearly trusts Musk, but that she believes another factor was at play.

Expect 'mini-crusades' as government crumbles under Trump: analyst

Former President Donald Trump and his allies have no plans to fix anything in government, and instead, they'll make a big show out of purging enemies from the civil service while shirking any responsibility for the ill consequences.

That's according to Marc Fisher who wrote in The Washington Post,"The rapscallions of the right are salivating over the scrumptious smorgasbord of opportunities for mischief that the District of Columbia represents."
