Vice President JD Vance dressed as Harry Potter’s Albus Dumbledore for Halloween on Saturday, and critics quickly flagged a detail about the wizard that turned his past jabs at Democratic Senate nominee James Talarico back on him.
“Hey guys, Vice President Dumbledore here with little Dobby the elf, wishing you a happy Halloween!” Vance is heard saying, holding his child dressed as another character from the Harry Potter series known as Dobby. “Have fun, be safe, eat a lot of candy.”
As flagged by countless critics, the character of Albus Dumbledore is canonically gay, as confirmed by author J.K. Rowling, making Vance’s past false implications that Talarico is gay all the more ironic.
“Making crude cracks about Talarico’s sexuality, then opting to dress up as a gay wizard. That’s about right,” wrote Michael Weiss, an investigative journalist, author and national security analyst.
While rallying earlier this month in Texas for Republicans, Vance responded to a rally attendee by saying, “I love you too, sir.” He went on to clarify: “In a totally platonic way, to be clear — I’m the vice president, not James Talarico.”
Vance’s suggestion that Talarico is gay is one of several false attacks Republicans have launched against the Texas Democrat as he continues to narrowly lead in the polls against his Republican opponent, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton.
For Vance to dress up as a canonically gay wizard after falsely suggesting Talarico was gay, several critics noted, was an ironic development.
“> Calls Talarico Gay > ??????????????????” wrote Curtis Fric, a polling aggregator who runs the popular X account “Polling USA.”
Ben Meiselas, co-founder of the progressive media organization MeidasTouch, called Vance’s decision to dress as Dumbledore “certainly a choice,” and prominent liberal influencer Ed Krassenstein argued that the fictional wizard “would despise JD Vance.”
