'Bad day for MAGA': Internet delights as GOP gets shot down over Merrick Garland

Barely two days after House Republicans passed a criminal referral of Attorney General Merrick Garland to the Justice Department for contempt of Congress, the DOJ signaled it would be rejecting their demand for criminal prosecution.

The contempt referral was based on DOJ's refusal to hand over the raw footage of President Joe Biden's interview with special counsel Robert Hur in the classified documents investigation — even though the GOP already had the complete transcript of that interview. The Biden administration considered this demand a pretext to hunt for embarrassing footage to clip out of context for GOP campaigns, and invoked executive privilege over the tape.

"The Apprentice" is not only the name of the hit reality show that featured Donald Trump during the 2000s — it is also the title of director Ali Abbasi's new movie about the former president's relationship with controversial attorney Roy Cohn, who served as counsel to the infamous Sen. Joseph McCarthy (R-WI) during the 1950s before representing a young Trump during the 1970s.

The New York Times' Michelle Goldberg discusses the film Friday, arguing that Trump and his allies are making a concerted effort to prevent U.S. audiences from seeing it.

'Worldwide economic warfare': Ex-Treasury secretary's doomsday prediction spurs fear

Lawrence Summers, who served as the 71st Secretary of the Treasury under former President Bill Clinton, warned of “worldwide economic warfare” if Donald Trump implements his policy proposals, Bloomberg reports.

Summers spoke with Bloomberg Television’s Wall Street Week with David Westin on Friday, describing Trump’s policy ideas as “a prescription for the mother of all stagflations.

According to Bloomberg, Summers’ comments came on the heels of Trump, in a meeting with Republicans on Capitol Hill Thursday, floating “using tariff hikes as a way to pay for some income tax cuts.”

Trump in that meeting “also proposed a minimum 10 percent universal import levy and a punitive rate for China,” Bloomberg reports.

Speaking to Westin on Friday, Summers warned there’s never “been a more inflationary presidential economic policy platform in my lifetime,” comparing the proposal to “George McGovern in 1972.”

Though Summers conceded Trump could be following the time-honored tradition of presidential candidates “not [being] serious about the things they say,” the former Treasury secretary described Trump’s public policy platform as an “irresponsible set of proposals.”

'Less capable in the brain' Trump mocked by elderly voters on CNN: 'How dumb was that?'

As Donald Trump turns 78 on Friday, CNN is reporting that he is losing the battle for voters close to his age who are becoming more active about keeping him out of the Oval Office as the presidential election nears.

Case in point, Gussie Farris, 86, a retired school counselor from Grand Rapids, who told CNN's Jeff Zeleny that Trump's brash style may make him seem a lot younger than President Joe Biden.

However, she added that that is misleading.

“Because Trump is big and loud, he doesn’t come off as old as maybe Biden does, but he’s way less capable in the brain area,” she said before laughing.

“I have people that come up to me because they know I’m a Democrat and say, ‘What can I do? I have to do something, find me something to do.’ I’ve never had that happen before,” she elaborated. “They don’t want Trump. They don’t want him to be the president. And I think they’re scared. They’re worried about our democracy and what he would do.”

Morning Joe fact-checks RNC 'sleazebags' pushing 'cheap fakes' to make Biden look feeble

MSNBC's Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski hammered right-wing media for spreading misleading photos and video that falsely appear to show president Joe Biden wandering away from a group of world leaders.

A social media account managed by Donald Trump campaign shared a clip that appeared to show the president doddering off from the gathering at the G7 summit Thursday before the Italian prime minister alerts him to a group photo, and the New York Post and other outlets owned by Rupert Murdoch seized on the video to suggest Biden was too old and infirm to be re-elected.
