Trump Jr. testimony will be 'explosive' if lawyers 'poke at him in the right way': Analyst
Donald Trump’s son will likely have a lot to say on the witness stand this week as he tries to prove the New York civil fraud case against his family is nothing more than a witch hunt, a legal expert told Newsweek Tuesday.
Donald Trump Jr. is slated to take the stand Wednesday in New York Attorney General Letitia James’ $250 million lawsuit, in which she contends the presidential family defrauded lenders by inflating the worth of the Trump Organization.
"Donald Trump Jr. is more likely to be forthcoming in his testimony and drive home his defense that this is a witch hunt," federal attorney Colleen Kerwick told Newsweek.
POLL: Should Trump be allowed to run for office?
This opinion is shared by NBC correspondent Ryan Reilly, who argued Donald Jr. could give "explosive testimony" if prosecutors "poke at him in the right way."
Trump Jr. will be the first Trump family member to testify in Judge Arthur Engoron’s courtroom. His sister Ivanka, slated to take the stand on Nov. 8 after postponing her Friday court date, will be the last.
Legal experts say Ivanka’s testimony most likely has Trump “spun up” over the case because of her close ties to several transactions under prosecutors’ scrutiny and her removal from the case, courtesy of an appeals court ruling.
“She is likely to continue in her efforts to avoid testifying,” Kerwick reportedly said. “If that fails, then she [will be] 'not recalling' a whole lot."
In the days that follow, James' team will be looking for inconsistencies in the siblings’ evidence, Kerwick told Newsweek.
That may be why former federal prosecutor Glenn Kirschner issued Monday the following advice to Trump’s progeny: “just plead the fifth.”
