'Extraordinary moment' as GOP lines up for 'elderly, crazed felon' Trump: conservative

Conservative Charlie Sykes bashed Republicans who are casting about for an alternative to Donald Trump but would still vote for him if he's the Republican nominee.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis appeared to be a strong challenger to Trump when he first entered the race, but he became the latest GOP candidate to falter against the quadruple-indicted former president, and Sykes told MSNBC's "Morning Joe" that even anti-Trump Republicans would eventually coalesce around him.

House GOP leadership served notice they could be booted if they blow 2024 election

Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) is not the Republican in the House whose future hangs in the balance due to a fractious caucus, with the entire leadership facing a revolt if the GOP loses the chamber in the 2024 election.

According to a report from Politico, speculation is running rampant that Johnson may not last as Speaker until November with more than a few far-right members sharpening their knives and plotting to boot him in much the same manner they ousted former Speaker. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) just months ago.

Politico is reporting, "A growing number of House Republicans are increasingly frustrated with Johnson’s leadership and whispering about whether he can hang on to his role after 2024 — if he even makes it that far. Despite serving barely three months as speaker, the Louisianan is already facing an immediate threat from Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia, who is openly disparaging him and suggesting she may try to boot him from the speakership."

Texas Rep. Pete Sessions admitted that, even if Johnson lasts until November, a loss of the House would mean the end for him in a leadership position, explaining, "It’s up to him to win or lose. And if he loses, he will leave."

The report goes on to note that the current House GOP leaders could also see their heads on the chopping block, with the report stating, "Broadly speaking, if House Republicans put up a lackluster showing this fall, there’s no guarantee that any member of their leadership — including Johnson, [Rep. Steve] Scalise and [Rep. Tom] Emmer — would be safe."

According to Rep. Kevin Hern (R-OK), "If we go back in the minority, do we need to take a different direction as we go forward as a conference? I think the entire leadership team would be looked at.”

Ex-federal prosecutor explains what MAGA and the scientifically illiterate have in common

A poll released prior to the third anniversary of the January 6 insurrection found that one in four Americans believe that the FBI "organized and encouraged" the deadly attack on the U.S. Capitol. However, a former federal prosecutor thinks the rest of America should be "grateful" that only 25% subscribe to that conspiracy theory.

In a recent column for Lawfare, former U.S. Attorney Chuck Rosenberg put that poll in perspective. He pointed out that, while it's true that one in four Americans believe the "nonsense" claim that the federal law enforcement was behind the U.S. Capitol siege that killed five police officers and injured hundreds more, the poll is less "depressing" when put in the context of other polls regarding information a large majority of Americans view as settled facts.

'Straightforward dictatorship': CNN panel thrashes Trump's 'total immunity' claims

A CNN panel on Friday warned that former President Donald Trump's claims that presidents should get "total immunity" from criminal prosecution would inevitably result in a dictatorship.
