And because Trump would be a first-time offender, Justice Juan Merchan may not sentence him to prison if the jury returns a guilty verdict. However, New York City Mayor Eric Adams has said that a section of the city's Rikers Island jail will be prepared for Trump in the event the former president is in fact ordered to spend time behind bars.
