Scott Brown: I wasn't drunk tweeting, I 'pocket-tweeted'
Former Sen. Scott Brown (R-MA) blamed "pocket-tweeting" for a series of late-night tweets last month that prompted speculation he sent them while drunk.
"Anyone ever hear of pocket tweet, pocket dial? I mean it was pretty simple," Brown told WFXT-TV in an interview that aired Monday. "I have an iPhone 5. If anyone has iPhone 5, the keys are small. It's very, very sensitive. [Daughter] Ayla was teaching me, obviously, how to get on Facebook and Twitter, and there were some areas I didn't really understand."
The Huffington Post reported on Jan. 26 that Brown tweeted, "Your brilliant Matt," "Whatever" and "Bqhatevwr" as part of a series of abrupt responses.
"I responded to a couple of people and put it in my pocket," Brown told the station of his social media activity that night.
Brown said were blown out of proportion both because he had kept out of the public eye after losing his re-election bid against current Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and because he was considered a possible contender to run for the senatorial seat vacated by now-Secretary of State John Kerry.
"First of all, I rarely drink," he said. "The last time I was ever drunk was my bachelor party. That was what, 28 years ago, 27 years ago? So I guess no one has ever pocket dialed or tweeted before."
Though Brown ultimately decided against running for Kerry's seat, he refused to confirm whether he will seek political office again in the future.
"I was a state house reporter, and you were a state senator, and that was a long time ago," reporter Maria Stephanos told Brown. "This is what we do, Scott: I'm gonna ask you the questions."
"And I'm gonna blow it off," Brown replied.
