Stark warning for GOP in Kansas Senate race as rural counties swing 20 points left

Early results in Kansas’ Senate race showed a stark warning sign for Republicans Tuesday night, according to a New York Times analysis.

Kansas hasn’t elected a Democratic senator since 1932, but Democratic challenger Adam Hamilton, a megachurch pastor, held an early lead over incumbent Sen. Roger Marshall (R-KS). Caroline Soler, an election data reporter for the Times, noted that the results showed significant shifts toward Democrats, including in rural parts of the state.

“In the Kansas Senate race, Adam Hamilton, the Democratic candidate and megachurch pastor, has a lead with around 40 percent of the expected vote having been reported,” Soler wrote. “While that advantage is expected to decrease as more votes are reported, Hamilton has greatly outperformed Kamala Harris’s 2024 margins statewide. Rural counties such as Ellis County, Labette County and Reno County have shifted close to 20 percentage points to the left.”

“A large number of votes are still to come in Johnson County, the largest in the state by population. The early vote there showed a large shift toward Hamilton, with the Democrat leading the county by 36 points,” she added.
