'A twist': Ex-prosecutor flags 'interesting footnote' in judge's Trump sentencing filing

Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Juan Merchan left a little surprise for Donald Trump in the court's recent sentencing filing in the president-elect's criminal case, a legal expert said.

Former federal prosecutor Joyce Vance wrote on her Substack about how, in her view, Merchan actually made the best out of a bad situation when he announced he wouldn't be sentencing Trump to jail time.

Trump and lawyers given a 'shot across the bow' from judge before hearing: legal expert

While speaking with her guests on Sunday afternoon, MSNBC host Jen Psaki singled out an admonishment made by Judge Juan Merchan in his sentencing ruling on Friday aimed at Donald Trump's lawyers and asked for an interpretation.

Sitting down with former FBI General Counsel Andrew Weissmann and ex-Solicitor General Neal Katyal, Psaki pointed to the filing and noted to her guests, "There were a number of messages, at least in my reading, in how Judge Merchan wrote this. It was scathing. He also calls out Trump's lawyers for using language in their filings he says has no place in legal pleadings."

"What does that tell you?" she asked.

'You know, I mean, it's a shot across the bow not just for the lawyers, but I think more specifically for Donald Trump himself who had done any, made any number of public statements about the court, about the judge, about the process that I think the judge was worried about," Katyal replied.

"The judge went so far as to actually quote Chief Justice John Roberts' statement on New Year's Eve about attacks on the judiciary destroying –– trying to destroy its credibility and undermine the safety and security of judges, so I think that's definitely part of it," he added.

'No clarity': Trump team said to be waiting for promised jobs that haven't manifested

Campaign staff of President-elect Donald Trump were promised jobs in the incoming administration, but those making hires have yet to hear whether the pledge was real, a report suggests.

Jasmine Wright, writing for NOTUS, revealed that the new administration had already broken its promise that top Trump aides "swore off" of Project 2025. The transition team is using the vetted job bank of MAGA loyalists to fill jobs in the new Trump government.

Trump Medicare pick Dr. Oz says uninsured ‘don’t have right to health’ in resurfaced clip

Mehmet Oz, widely recognized as television’s “Dr. Oz” and President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee to head Medicare and Medicaid, has sparked controversy over resurfaced remarks from a 2013 speech, where he addressed the balance between personal and governmental responsibility for the uninsured.

Dr. Oz told members of the National Governors' Association (video below) that uninsured Americans "don't have the right to health," but should be given "a way of crawling back out of the abyss of darkness of fear over not having the health they need." That, he suggested, could come via physicals in a "festival-like setting."

Elon Musk knifes Mike Johnson immediately after backing Trump’s endorsement of him

Elon Musk, the billionaire co-chair of the Department of Government Efficiency, suggested he could oppose Rep. Mike Johnson (R-LA) for speaker of the House — moments after promising "full support" for the Republican lawmaker.

In a post on the X social media platform, Johnson thanked President-elect Donald Trump for his "Complete & Total endorsement."

'Resistance is now futile': Disgraced ex-Rep Matt Gaetz urges GOP to give up speaker fight

Disgraced ex-Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) urged Republicans to support House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), posting to X on Monday that resistance was "now futile".

Gaetz's pronouncement came shortly after President-elect Donald Trump officially endorsed Johnson's bid to keep his job. The embattled speaker faces a contentious leadership vote on Jan. 3 after angering some members of his party with his handling of the federal budget, which finally passed the House this month after two failed votes that nearly caused a government shutdown.

'Totally perverse': How MAGA’s revolt against Johnson could lead to 'meltdown and anarchy'

House Speaker Mike Johnson's (R-La.) decision to stay in Washington D.C. to push a bill keeping the government open for three more months across the finish line meant he missed a scheduled appearance in front of MAGA activists. Now, the GOP's hardline base is turning against him.

In an analysis for the Bulwark (an establishment conservative website), journalist Andrew Egger contrasted MAGA's icy response to Johnson's snub with their embrace of former Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) at that same event. Egger noted that on Sunday, the Florida Republican was met with enthusiasm from the crowd at far-right group Turning Point USA's annual "AmericaFest" conference in Arizona despite the public release of the House Ethics Committee's report on the scandalous allegations against him.

‘Go to hell’: Trump melts down at Canada and Panama in ‘Merry Christmas’ post

Donald Trump wished a “Merry Christmas to all” on Wednesday, but the merriment took a sharp turn as the president-elect quickly let loose on a wide range of Christmas Day grievances.

“Merry Christmas to all, including to the wonderful soldiers of China, who are lovingly, but illegally, operating the Panama Canal (where we lost 38,000 people in its building 110 years ago), always making certain that the United States puts in Billions of Dollars in 'repair' money, but will have absolutely nothing to say about ‘anything,’” Trump wrote Wednesday afternoon on his Truth Social platform.

'Pay-to-pray': Trump reportedly charges supporters $100K to attend church service with him

The day before his inauguration, President-elect Donald Trump will reportedly be attending an interfaith prayer service in Washington D.C. His wealthiest supporters can also attend — if they write or solicit a big enough check.

That's according to a recent report in Religion News Service, which published promotional material from Trump's inaugural committee showing a list of different tiers of "benefits" depending on how much a donor gives. On January 18, donors can get tickets to a "Make America Great Again Victory Rally," a Cabinet reception and a dinner with Vice President-elect J.D. Vance.

Although Republicans flipped the U.S. Senate in the 2024 election and ousted longtime Democratic Sens. Sherrod Brown of Ohio, Jon Tester of Montana and Bob Casey Jr. of Pennsylvania, Democratic Sen.-elect Ruben Gallego defeated far-right MAGA Republican and conspiracy theorist Kari Lake.

Gallego, in January, will be taking over the seat presently held by outgoing centrist Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (a former Democrat turned independent).

'Blindsided' and 'furious' Trump turned Elon Musk loose on House leadership: insider

According to a deep dive into how House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) managed to get most of his caucus and Donald Trump to agree on a budget package that kept the government working until March, the Washington Post is reporting that Johnson "blindsided" the president-elect by also negotiating with Democrats.

That, in turn, led Trump to prompt billionaire adviser Elon Musk to launch a war on the House leadership in a flurry of attacks on X that derailed the proposed deal at the time.

'Diplomatic clown car': Trump buried over 'outrageously bad appointments' of ambassadors

Many of the people President-elect Donald Trump has appointed to represent the United States overseas are severely lacking in diplomatic experience, and several foreign policy experts are blasting the incoming president over his choice of diplomats.

The Guardian reported that several of Trump's picks for U.S. ambassadors — like former NFL player Herschel Walker to the Bahamas and former Fox News personality Kimberly Guilfoyle to Greece — are being roundly mocked over their inexperience. Foreign policy analyst Joe Cirincione told the outlet that he's so far been disappointed by Democrats' muted response to Trump's ambassador nominees.
