'Ridiculous': Observers slam Supreme Court for justifying Trump's 'complete mess'

Supreme Court watchers slammed Justices Amy Coney Barrett and Samuel Alito on Wednesday for appearing to spend some of their time during the oral arguments over tariffs trying to change the discussion to address something else entirely.

Barrett pivoted a long debate to discuss the "mess" that would result if the high court agreed that President Donald Trump doesn't have the legal authority to impose tariffs; only Congress does.

Supreme Court may strike down Trump in desperate effort to save face: expert

The Supreme Court heard oral arguments this week in a case challenging President Donald Trump’s tariffs, with plaintiffs arguing that his unilateral levies on imported goods violate the Constitution, which grants Congress the power to impose taxes and regulate foreign commerce. The Trump administration has justified his unprecedented use of tariffs under a 1977 law known as the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, but several justices seemed highly skeptical of that argument, potentially putting President Trump’s signature economic policy at risk.

“There is no genuine emergency. There is no war that is the precipitating basis for invoking IEEPA. And even if it were, it would not allow the imposition of tariffs,” says legal expert Lisa Graves, founder of True North Research and co-host of the podcast Legal AF.

'Anything but normal': Neal Katyal slams Judge Cannon's 'laughable' hearings

U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon is letting former President Donald Trump's classified documents trial get bogged down in debates and issues that no reasonable judge would have to devote this much time and energy to, former acting solicitor general Neal Katyal told MSNBC's Joy Reid on Monday evening.

This comes after Cannon held a hearing on whether to remove or defund special counsel Jack Smith from the case altogether — an idea she seemed to be skeptical of, but that was highly unusual for her to even devote a hearing to in the first place.

Legal experts who have spoken with Vanity Fair have expressed grave concern about the legal maneuverings currently being conducted in the criminal case against New York Mayor Eric Adams.

Trump and lawyers given a 'shot across the bow' from judge before hearing: legal expert

While speaking with her guests on Sunday afternoon, MSNBC host Jen Psaki singled out an admonishment made by Judge Juan Merchan in his sentencing ruling on Friday aimed at Donald Trump's lawyers and asked for an interpretation.

Sitting down with former FBI General Counsel Andrew Weissmann and ex-Solicitor General Neal Katyal, Psaki pointed to the filing and noted to her guests, "There were a number of messages, at least in my reading, in how Judge Merchan wrote this. It was scathing. He also calls out Trump's lawyers for using language in their filings he says has no place in legal pleadings."

"What does that tell you?" she asked.

'You know, I mean, it's a shot across the bow not just for the lawyers, but I think more specifically for Donald Trump himself who had done any, made any number of public statements about the court, about the judge, about the process that I think the judge was worried about," Katyal replied.

"The judge went so far as to actually quote Chief Justice John Roberts' statement on New Year's Eve about attacks on the judiciary destroying –– trying to destroy its credibility and undermine the safety and security of judges, so I think that's definitely part of it," he added.

'Can't fathom that fist pump': Neal Katyal slams Trump's 'atrocious' hush money defense

Former President Donald Trump's legal team delivered an "atrocious" defense in the most recent day in his Manhattan criminal hush money trial, former acting solicitor general Neal Katyal told MSNBC's Ari Melber.

The day featured testimony from Jeff McConney, the corporate controller of the Trump Organization, who recounted his role in reimbursing Trump's former attorney and fixer Michael Cohen for the alleged hush payments to adult film star Stormy Daniels, which prosecutors say was fraudulently concealed from regulators — and Trump seemed to think it went well, making a "fist pump" gesture that was captured in the courtroom sketches, but Katyal made very clear it did not go well for him at all.
