'Aggressive step': Report warns Trump just decimated the US Postal Service

President Donald Trump and the U.S. Postal Service's leadership have reportedly agreed to appoint a FedEx board member to succeed Louis DeJoy as postmaster general, heightening concerns that the administration is pushing the independent mail agency toward privatization.

The Washington Post reported late Tuesday that Trump and the USPS Board of Governors are expected to name former Waste Management CEO David Steiner to lead the Postal Service. Steiner is currently the lead independent director at FedEx, a Postal Service competitor.

James Comer urged to launch probe into DOGE 'backroom agreement'

A group of House Democrats is demanding that the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform conduct a public hearing on the Trump administration and the so-called Department of Government Efficiency's plans for the U.S. Postal Service, in light of recent reporting that U.S. Postmaster General Louis DeJoy says he signed an agreement with DOGE to assist the nation's mail service "in identifying and achieving further efficiencies."

The news follows Washington Post coverage from February, when the outlet reported that U.S. President Donald Trump is considering putting the Postal Service under the control of the Commerce Department. In December, the Post also reported that Trump was eyeing privatizing the Postal Service. Elon Musk, a GOP megadonor who is playing a core role in Trump's efforts to slash federal spending and personnel, has also said the Postal Service should be privatized.

Biden just got one step closer to replacing Louis DeJoy

Ever since Postmaster General Louis DeJoy — a major Republican donor — was selected to head the United States Postal Service (USPS) in 2020, he's been enacting massively unpopular policies criticized by postal workers and Democrats alike. Now, President Joe Biden may soon be able to replace him.

On Thursday, Politico congressional correspondent Anthony Adragna reported that Biden was nominating former Rep. Val Demings (D-Florida) to fill the last remaining vacancy on the USPS Board of Governors. She, along with former Labor Secretary Marty Walsh, are now awaiting confirmation by the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, which is chaired by Sen. Gary Peters (D-Michigan).

Postal Service preps for fight with Trump amid takeover plot: report

President Donald Trump plans to declare the dissolution of the board of the U.S. Postal Service and order its incorporation into the Department of the Treasury, a move widely considered illegal and would set up a court showdown, as well as thrust trillions of dollars of economic activity into uncertainty, The Washington Post reported on Thursday.

"Trump is expected to issue an executive order as soon as this week to fire the members of the Postal Service’s governing board and place the agency under the control of the Commerce Department and Secretary Howard Lutnick, according to six people familiar with the plans, who spoke on the condition of anonymity out of fear of reprisals," said the report. "The board is planning to fight Trump’s order, three of those people told The Washington Post."

DeJoy faces pain over postal 'crime wave’

Amid nonstop grilling by U.S. senators about the nation’s shambolic mail system, Postmaster General Louis DeJoy had jokes.

After Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) relayed a constituent’s question about the manufacturing of ubiquitous blue mail boxes on America’s street corners, DeJoy cracked that Johnson's constituent wouldn't want to steal from one of those blue mailboxes … would they?
