RNC warns 2024 contenders to steer clear of far-right evangelical forum in Iowa

The Republican National Committee has warned 2024 presidential candidates that speaking at the Family Leader’s Thanksgiving forum will prevent them from participating in future Republican presidential debates. But the Family Leader plans to move forward with the event, staff said Thursday, with at least three candidates who have confirmed they will attend.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, U.S. Sen. Tim Scott and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy have all told the Family Leader that they plan to be at the Des Moines event Nov. 17, which advertises itself as a space for presidential candidates to “gather around the table to have a moderated, friendly and open discussion about the issues that are most important to evangelical Americans today.”

Though it is not a debate, the Family Leader has set polling thresholds for participation, requiring candidates to have a Real Clear Politics polling average of 4% or more in national or Iowa polls by Nov. 1. Along with the three candidates planning to attend, former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley and former President Donald Trump are eligible to participate, and have been invited, Drew Zahn, director of communications for the organization, said.

Trump-loving dirty tricksters have their day at Michigan Supreme Court

Two far-right operatives who made tens of thousands of calls spreading misinformation about voting across Midwestern states ahead of the 2020 presidential election, had oral arguments taken Thursday in their robocall voter intimidation criminal case in the Michigan Supreme Court.

Investigators who have looked into calls made in Michigan, Ohio and New York estimate that Jack Burkman and Jacob Wohl, who both have a history of manufacturing conservative conspiracy theories, made about 85,000 robocalls with false information about voting in an attempt to keep people from participating in the 2020 election in which Republican former President Donald Trump lost to Democratic President Joe Biden.

GOP super PAC claiming Trump connection under investigation by election officials: report

Federal Election Commission officials are investigating a Republican super PAC that appears to have received a Small Business Administration loan from an emergency pandemic relief program, reported The Daily Beast on Thursday.

"On Wednesday, the Federal Election Commission sent two notices to a Republican super PAC called 'America Great PAC' inquiring about the circumstances surrounding repayments it made for a $16,500 SBA loan it received in June 2020 as part of the COVID relief program," reported Roger Sollenberger. Federal law does not permit PACs of any kind to take loans from the SBA, he noted; for example: "In 2021, the Justice Department sentenced a Nevada man to 46 months in prison for 'fundraising for fake political action committees (PACs) that he created, and the other involving COVID-19 relief funds he sought and received through fraudulent applications.'"

With the eyes and ears keeping Mar-a-Lago running being questioned by federal investigators in former President Donald Trump's classified document hoarding criminal case, it's his ex esquire that should worry him most.

'High on its own supply': MSNBC host shows how GOP's election denialism backfired on party

The GOP has spent years convincing itself of its own false claims about election fraud and rigging, said anchor Ari Melber on MSNBC Thursday evening — and the latest round of election losses they suffered on Tuesday proves it has backfired on them, much like a drug dealer raiding his own stash.

"The fact that the Trump wing of the party embraced denialism has hurt the party's ability to get anywhere near competitive," said Melber. "If you're watching this and want a healthy democracy, that's a bad thing. If you're watching and want Republicans to keep losing elections you're hoping they keep making this mistake. The Republican Party, under Trump's election denialism, has been lying to itself, and that doesn't work, which brings us to an iconic and true lesson from 'Scarface.'"
